Nelson Mandela: Family Man and Fashion Icon by admin on June 26, 2018

He will be remembered as an anti-apartheid prisoner who became the father of modern South Africa.

But an exhibition is to explore another side of Nelson Mandela – his status as a family man and fashion icon.

The show next year, supported by his relatives, will bring some of his belongings to London including his favourite coat, trademark coloured shirts and a traditional headdress.

His grandson Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela said the exhibition in Waterloo would “talk to the traditional family man” he knew as Madiba. He said: “Madiba always prided himself on his clothes, from the early days … in traditional attire to the suit he wore when he stood in the dock … we are trying to give that to the world to gain an understanding of how much he was drawn to fashion and how he presented himself.” He said they chose London as “we don’t forget those people who stood side by side with us”.
