London’s New Urban Culture Destination Opens in Waterloo by admin on June 16, 2018

Saturday 16th June marks phase one of the opening of Leake Street Arches. Eight former railway arches next to the famous Graffiti Tunnel in Waterloo have been brought back to life to provide a collection of independent bars, restaurants and entertainment spaces that celebrate urban culture.

Leake Street was made famous in May 2008, when street artist Banksy came across the abandoned road tunnel that was previously used by taxis to queue for passengers (before the Eurostar terminal moved north of the river).

Banksy saw the potential of the dark, damp space and organised an event for graffiti artists from around the world to transform the tunnel into (in his own words) “an oasis of beautiful art”. The CansFestival attracted thousands of people, international press coverage and put Leake Street on the map as a democratic cultural venue for street art.

Following investment into the sensitive restoration of the railway arches as well as the introduction of a new, state-of-the-art lighting system, (designed in collaboration with graffiti artists to better showcase their work) Leake Street Arches will be home to eight new independent businesses.

The completion of phase one this week, sees the official opening of Banh Bao Brothers, Draughts, Aures London and Rat Bar @ 26 Leake Street.
